我们的宝贝出世了

2008 Nov 20, 11:40am, my big boss suddenly called me to her room, wanted to assign new urgent task to me and my colleague Chiaw Ding. Sigh… my expected delivery date can be any time from end of Nov, never mind lar, just do what I can.

12:30pm, finished discussion with my big boss. All the lunch kaki already went out for lunch. Chiaw Ding and I decided go McDonald for lunch. Before reach the McDonald which located at the 1st floor in KKH, we went to ladies. Oh no! I saw some bleeding and water gush out! Is this one of the labour sign? (Now was 37th weeks of pregnancy) I felt so nervous and excited at the same time haha, because can see my baby soon. Chiaw Ding asked whether we should go to delivery suite immediately? No, no, people say must eat full full before give birth hehe…

After admitted to delivery suite at 1:15pm, I called my husband, then informed my supervisor and boss (I think the task assigned by her made my baby pressure and wanted to come out haha…). 1.40pm, Doctor Goh (Doctor Irene Chua out of town, all her patient taken care by Doctor Goh, pretty woman as well) came to check, cervix dilate to 2 cm. Nurses put on the induction medication to increase the contraction and dilation. But my baby did not like the induction, her heart beat showed unstable and dropped to unsafe level. Nurses and 2 young doctors quickly came in to check and monitor baby heart beat. They immediately switched off the induction medication. After half an hour, nurse switched on the induction again with lower level, but my little one still don’t like it, every time I have strong and constant contraction pain, her heart beat become unstable.

5:30pm (after 4 hours), Doctor Goh came to see me again. My dilation still was 2cm. She checked through my contraction and baby heart beat pattern, she then advised us to go for caesarean! She explained that baby did not cope well with the induction medication, baby head position still very high, and my pelvic size is smaller compare to others. I looked at my husband, husband looked at me, how ar? Should we go for caesarean? Actually husband and I already prepared for it to have nature birth, we wanted to go through together and hand-in-hand to welcome our baby. So we requested to wait for another 3-4 hours, hope that my contraction pain will become stronger and dilate faster without induction medication.

8:10pm, Doctor God came again. Baby heart beat was all right. But I was still dilated to 2cm only. Again, doctor advised go for caesarean. She mentioned that base on her experience, my case will be end up with caesarean even though we wait until tomorrow 7am. Husband and I struggle again. I don’t know how to describe my feeling during that time, very hard to make decision. After discuss with husband and doctor, we requested to wait until tomorrow morning 7am since baby heart beat was stable. (Doctor mentioned baby is safe to stay inside within 24 hours after water break)

However, just 5 minutes after we made the decision, baby heart beat again become unstable and dropped to unsafe level (I think she can’t wait to see this beautiful world hehe). Doctor quickly came in and advised go for caesarean immediately. Husband and I agreed as baby safety is most important.

My husband was not allowed to follow into the operation room. When I was transfer to the operation room, I did not fear at that time (maybe no time for me to fear), I saw many nurses and doctor (at least 8 person), they acted very quick, asked me few questions, touched my head, my leg, my hand, then … I think within 1 minutes, I totally lost conscious. My husband waited outside, started to worry, 15 minutes was very long for him…

Baby Scan (36th Weeks)

Time is flying, so fast I reach 36th weeks already. Yesterday went for regular checkup, surprisingly my weight increased 0.6kg only within 2 weeks, so far I gained 13kgs (now is 54kgs), not bad, in a normal range hehe :p

But what I concern more is my baby weight, because in the last visit doctor mentioned that baby size is relatively big/chubby if compare to my mini size. But of course I do hope that she can gain as much nutrition as she can. Em, out of 0.6kg I gained, my little one absorbed 0.3kg! Estimated size is about 2.7kgs. To me, this size is ok, but doctor mentioned she is a bit worried. If she advised to induce by the week of 38th, I think I will agree, because I hope to have nature birth, and I cant wait to see my little one! If I do not agree to induce, and naugthy girl dont want to come out until week of 40th, then most probably will reach size of >3.5 kgs, the chance go for Operation is quite high.

So the most ideal is, baby ready to come out before induce lar, my colleague advised me to talk to baby every night, baby can hear and will cooperate with mummy and daddy !! hehe....

Baby Scan (34th Weeks)

Last Thursday we went for regular check-up. As usual, will take urine test and measure on weight gain and blood pressure. Every time we will feel excited because can get to know how many kgs gained by myself and how many percent gained by my little one :p

During 34th week, I reached 53.4kg, gained about 12kgs. Doctors said the rate is fine and it is in normal range. I highlighted to her that I have bit water retention on my legs, she advised me to drink more and walk more. Then she scanned my baby, every time she will show the baby heart beat, see baby legs & hand, baby gender, see baby movement, but this time baby seems not moving and kicking a lot compare to last time, most probably not much space for her to move around haha….

Doctor then measured and estimated the baby weight by measuring her stomach diameter. Doctor mentioned that baby is developing well and healthy. However, because of my mini size, our baby size relatively is bigger than what doctor expect haha... Baby, now you are about 2.4kg, if you continue to gain 0.2kg every week, then you will gain total 3.6kg at the week of 40 (full term baby).

So, doctor advised me to control diet, now I seldom to take tea break already :p. After 2 weeks doctor want to see her again, if the development rate is still the same, then she will advise us to induce by 38th week (by end of Nov) ^-^

Everytime visit park or go outing, hubby will take a lot of photos for me. But after filter and filter, really hard to choose favorite photo for sharing, is not because his shooting skill not good, is because I realized that I really gained weight a lot recently! I look fat fat in the photo, haha.... but never mind lar, pregnant women is like this one mar, after delivery then only keep fit lar hehe.....

This year I received quite a lot of birthday wishes from friends and colleagues. Em, what is my birthday wishes ler! I wish to have a pleasant delivery experience, and most important is, delivery a healthy baby! ^-^

Baby scan (29th weeks)

We went to have regular checkup on last Thursday. This was my 29th weeks (7th months++), every time checkup we will have chance to see our baby through the ultrasound scan, can see baby movement, oh, she is always moving and kicking inside.

Everytime scan doctor will check baby gender if the position is suitable. haha, this time doctor can see her 'hamburger' again, haha.... doctor scan and take her picture, her legs, her stomach, her face. By measuring the stomach size, my baby is about 1.4kgs, doctor said is in the right range. no worry ^-^

My next appointment will be 5 weeks later, about 34th weeks, doctor mentioned that we can book the ward / room in the next appointment. Oh so fast time is flying! My expected due date is about 11th December (40th weeks), I feel nervous and excited at the same time. Excited, because I can see my love one very soon. Nervous, because I worry what would happen during my labour day? I know hubby and I and baby will work hard together, no matter how, this is a big event and unforgetable experience!

Is it possible working at home?

After 4 years working life in this society, started feel bored and tired become programmer or application support. Wake up early morning at 7am, left office in the evening and reach home about 7pm (provided no OT and traffic jam). Spending 12 hours for work!

Start to imagine how is life after my little one comes to this world. Everyday after office hour go to fetch her from Nanny house / childcare center. No time to cook dinner for family. Everyday spend only 2-3 hours with her and husband in the nighttime. We have only 2-3 hours spend with our family!

How good if I am a housewife? Oh no no, firstly financially is not allowed at this moment. Stay at home all the time can make a lady easier to become ‘yellow face’ aunty, haha. How good if I can spent 70% of my time with my little one, and 30% of my time spend to do something meaningful and earn some money at the same time?

Last few weeks I read a topic in Singapore motherhood forum (I always go to the forum because they discuss a lot of baby stuff and information). The topic is ‘Working at home’. The mummy mentioned she quit her job and currently work at home and able to earn attractive income. She did not mentioned what she did, just provide a link.

After reading some articles and google for relevant information, what the mummy doing is Affiliate Marketing. Affiliate Marketing basically is helping other people to promote their products online and get the commission from there. Of course this is not an easy job, but I would say this is a good business if successful. Along the way I explored many interesting learning point, such as how to make our personal website / blog searchable by others? If you have your own website/ blog, try to input some ‘Keywords’, but you are unable to search your website / blog in the Google search engine!

Listen to give birth experience

Last week I listened to 3 experiences from my friends and cousin. Their expected due date all estimated in month September.

My cousin called me on 15th Sept, about 2pm and told me that she was in delivery suit. She mentioned that the contraction pain was bearable until cervix dilated to 5cm-6cm. Starting from 8-9pm, the pain was stronger and stronger. She is very strong and brave, no epidural applied. About 7am on 16th Sept, cervix dilated to 8cm. The contraction was true painful. Doctor allowed her to push at this stage. She tried about 20-25 minutes to push the baby out. Finally she saw her lovely son ^-^.

After 2 days I received another good news from my ex-colleague. She experiences light contraction pain in the midnight about 1am. She can’t really fall into sleep for whole night. She went to hospital about 7am. She already decided to have epidural in very early stage of her pregnancy. So when cervix dilated to 1 cm, she required doctor to apply epidural. After 10 hours, cervix dilated to 10 cm, was time to push. My friend felt very painful as the epidural was finish and doctor advised not to add, so that she can feel the contraction pain and able to push. However her baby stop going down and the baby location was still very far for doctor to vacuum. With doctor advice, emergency caesarean was carried out. Very surprisingly her baby girl is 3.86kg!

Next was my ex-course-mate. She experienced water-bag break in the midnight, about 12am++. She and husband were panic and quickly drove to hospital. When cervix dilated to 2-3cm (at 7am ++), she decided to apply epidural. After 7-8 hours, cervix dilated to 10cm. She was lucky, she felt no pain for the whole process in the pushing stage. Maybe is because she can’t feel the contraction pain, she not able to push effectively. With the vacuum help, her baby boy was delivered ^-^.

As conclusion, different mummy have different experience. Delivery baby is not easy, especially in our parent generation, no sufficient technology and pain relieve way.

For myself, if there is no complicated case, I would like to try and experience the pain. I always asked my friends how is the contraction pain feel? Different people gave me different answers. However I wont refuse to apply epidural if really not able to cope with the pain haha.

Still have 2 and half months to go, not to think too much. Enjoy my baby movement and kicking first….

Baby name

Once I knew I was pregnant, I can’t wait to think of baby name. In fact, I already have few names in mind since university time hehe… but the names not suitable for now because some words used by close friends or relatives.

I started to think of girl and boy name. I listed down many names and showed to husband for him to decide, but husband mentioned we should only focus after we get know baby gentle. Haha, probably I was too excited.

For Chinese name, most people will follow certain rules and depends on baby birth date and time. Some people will buy a book and calculate themselves, some will go to ‘shi fu’ for him to recommend. For myself, I have no very strong believe on this. In my opinion, as long as the name is good in listening, easy to write, good meaning, not too common, easy to pronounce, is consider good name.

Husband and I also thinking to pick an English name for baby. English name no need to follow custom rules, but every name has different meaning, origin from different country. To me, the name should be not so common, easy to pronounce and having good meaning.

This Baby Names Dictionary consists of an e-book and software. The software provides dynamic search function and maintenance spreadsheet for selected names. Here is another e-book provides a list of baby name and the basic guidelines.

I plan to deliver baby in Singapore as I am working in KKH hospital, can work until last minutes when baby willing to come to this world. I also plan to have confinement in Singapore and my mother in law will come to help. My mother asked whether I could go back to hometown for full month celebration? I hope so but not sure all the procedures, especially baby passport can be ready within one month.

Luckily my colleague Kar Fung who has experienced in applying baby documents for her new born, I asked her help to write down the details for my reference. Here I shared out the info, especially for future mummy.

Looking for nanny

My due date is about 11 Dec 2008, so is time to look for nanny. Our first option is looking for nanny around our area (toa payoh lorong 7), so that we can bring baby go and back from nanny house without driving. We do have few contacts, but most of them staying quite far from walking distance. Got 2 nanny staying nearby, but one is very calculative, another one not suitable due to her husband and mother in law are smoker. In short, is not easy to get a good nanny.

Yesterday husband and I designed and printed out a stack of flyers (Looking for Nanny!) :p At first we planned to distribute door by door, but at the end we gave up because we distributed selectively, and dont know why I felt 'pai se' when saw got people sitting at the living room. End up we decided to distribute the flyers in every post box at the first floor, fast and easy! Next week we will keep on distributing flyers if still no response.

According to experienced friend's advise, below are the things to check out when interview the nanny: -
  • Where the baby cot will be - airy, drafy? too bright?
  • General cleanliness and hygiene, e.g. floor, kitchen, toilet
  • who else at the house, any smoker, children?
  • General environment - noise, bright, airy, or dark
  • ask nanny about her experience, when was the last baby, why stopped?
  • what does she normally do with the baby? takes baby out to pasar / market?
  • off days / sick days arrangement
  • diapers - cloth or disposables?
  • bottles and teats - how she sterilise?

Our 2nd option is childcare centre. But my concerns are baby may easier to get sick as there will be more infant in one rooms, virus easy to spread out if one of the baby is not feeling well. The fees is not cheap as well, it is affordable if I can get KKH staff price (about $750), but after transfer to IHIS, I believe KKH only will offer corporate rate which is about $1,300 per months.

Activities during pregnancy (my first DIY sushi)

Before pregnant, normally every 2 weeks we will have badminton playing session, with my ex-roommates. Or we will going out to park / garden for walking, picnic or photo taking.

I like travel, before I get to know I was pregnant, we already booked air ticket to Bali in July 2008. During my 4th month of pregnancy, total 8 of us (friends, husband and I) visited Bali for 5D4N trip. It was wonderfull trip. Here is our bali photo: http://www.freewebs.com/bali-trip/

So what I can do during pregnancy? em, watching movie, go shopping for baby stuff, reading books, writing blog, ya, cooking at home!

Picture on the left shows my first DIY sushi photo taken by my lovely husband. The taste was not as nice as it looks, haha, not enough vinegar and salt. I will do it better for next time!

Besides sushi, husband and I also learned how to do the Milo Cake! It was taste good and succesfull! I refer to my friend recipi written in her blog: http://rain-mydiary.blogspot.com/search/label/My%20Kitchen

Weight gain during pregnancy

My little one is baby girl!

When I reached 20th weeks, my doctor arranged the detailed scan session to ensure baby is well developed. Doctor scanned the size of head, stomach, heart, kidney and more parts of the body that I may not aware off.

Remember to drink more water and not go to pass urine before go for scanning. The whole process takes about 30 minutes, then the report will be immediately available for analysis. The report shows my baby is well developed and the size is just nice, in average.

The most excited thing in this detailed scan is, we are able to know our baby gender! The doctor scan the middle part between the baby legs. We are not expert, so not very sure how to see girls or boys haha.... My little on is baby girl!

I like girl. My husband is ok with both gender for the first child. Of course both of us hope the 2nd child will be opposite gender --> baby boy! In Chinese, 'good' wording is combination of 'female' and 'male' !

My colleague recommended a website to predict gender of the baby. Input the mummy’s age and the month of conception into this website:http://www.motherhood.com.sg/tools/gender.asp. However, I did count for my friends and colleagues, the accuracy percentage are only about 60% (5 out of 8 are correct).

Refer to this website, promoting a e-book: How to choose the gender of your baby!

Basically the gentle selection system in this book focuses on 3 steps as below:-

    • Timing and PH Level
    • Minor diet adjustment
    • Specify intercourse position

Based on 12,000 couples, the success rate of the ‘system’ is about 94%. The cost of the e-book is about USD$47 (as of 29 Aug 2008). The author mentioned that she will return the money back if couple not able to conceive the gender of their choice! It is worth to try, right!

    Antenatal Programme

Pregnancy is probably the most exciting period in any woman's life. It is a time of happiness and joy. But it will also be a time of great emotional and physical change. Therefore I decided to attend the Antenatal Programme to help understand the changes associated with pregnancy and prepares myself for labour.

Many hospital in Singapore offer this kind of antenatal programme to patient and public. They will encourage couple to start at 16 weeks of pregnancy. In KKH, this programme consists of 9 one-and-a-half hour sessions. One session per week, 6.30pm - 8.15pm for weekday class, 9am-10.45am & 11.15am-1.00pm for Saturday class.

Basically below are the main topic/sections covered: -
    • Nutrition during pregnancy
    • Medications in pregnancy
    • Looking after yourself during pregnancy
    • Labour and Delivery
    • Pain Relief in Labour
    • Relaxation method
    • Coping with 1st stage and 2nd stage and 3rd stage of labour
    • Postnatal exercise
    • Preparing for admission
    • Breastfeeding
    • Care of your newborn
    • Nurturing your baby
    • The ABCs of Vaccinations

Below are the fees for KKH patients and non-kkh patients

    KKH Patients

    • $120.00 for Weekday classes
    • $150.00 for Saturday classes

    Non-KKH Patients

    • $150.00 for Weekday classes
    • $180.00 for Saturday classes

As KKH staff, myself get additional 50% off ^-^

Screening for Down Syndrome (12th weeks)

When reach 11th - 14th weeks, Doctor will recommend for detailed scan for Down Syndrome. Down Syndrome is the most common cause of learning difficulties in newborn babies. It occurs in 1 out of every 700 babies.

Anyone can have a baby with Down Syndrome, regardless of age, family history or ethnic background. However, a woman's risk of having a baby with Down Syndrome increases with age.

Below are 3 types of packages provided in KKH: -
    • Package A: Ultrasound scan at 11-14 weeks, detection rate:80%, Price ~ $165
    • Package B: Ultrasound scan and Blood test at 11-14 weeks, detection rate: 90%, Price ~$330
    • Package C: Ultrasound scan at 11-14 weeks, Blood test at 15-20 weeks, detection rate: 90%, Price~$280

I chosen Package B. During the ultrasound scan, the doctor focused on the thickness and visible of the skin and bone of the back-neck, as well as the visible of the nose bone. The results was available on 2 working days after blood test. The report will show the analysis and most important the posibility and percentage after complicated formula taking place.

    My baby scan (7th weeks)

I felt so nervous because this time scan doctor can tell us whether is twins. Our appointment was about 8.30am, but we reach The Private Suite 15 minutes early.

I like children but I do not hope is twins because I worry not able to provide efficient nutrients to both babies, how and who going to take of 2 new born at the same time? I prefer to take exam paper one by one in different timing hehe...

In the last scan, doctor not able to see the baby because of the fetus size was too small for ultrasound to detect. I worried is twins, at the same time I worried what if no baby in both waterbag?

Thanks god, fortunately we saw a smal fetus (baby) sleeping in one of the water bag. The heartbeat was strong and clearly visible. Another water bag looks much smaller, doctor mentioned that it will be getting smaller and disappear.

My expected due date is 11 Dec 2008. My small baby was about 1.2cm!

My baby first scan (5th weeks)

I am working in KK Women and Children Hospital. Once we tested my pregnancy using the tester, we immediately made an appointment with doctor in KKH. Because KK offers good discount rate for staff, I chosen Consultant Dr. Irene Chua in Private Suite.

Picture on the left shows the my baby first scan in the 5th week! You guess what, I have Twins in the very early stage! Doctor told us there were 2 water bags, 50% is twin! Because now is in very early stage where still cannot see the baby in both waterbags. Next appointment will be 2 weeks later.

It is unbelievable! My husband was so excited but I felt worry. My size was too small and I dont think I can support 2 babies in my tummy hehe....

During this period, I shared my happiness and worries with my husband, my sister, my mummy and few colleagues.

    First time mother

I am first time mother. Husband and I planned to have our own children since marriage in Dec 2007.

With 3 months of 'hardwork', wonderful news come to us in mid of April 2008. My period was delayed about 10 days and we can't wait to buy a pregnancy tester in Watson. Yeah...... the result was lovely, husband and I were so excited!

For the first 2 months, I did not feel a lot of changes or so called pregnancy symptoms. My breasts felt a bit tender compared to before. Then starting from 3rd month to 4th months, I experienced morning sickness whereby no appetite especially for dinner. Sometimes vomit. It may help to eat small meals throughout the day, snack on crackers or toast, or drink juice or lemonade. From 4th-5th months onward, the situation getting better and better ^-^
